Being a northerner in the world of
blogging I find to be somewhat unique. The majority of my fellow
bloggers are actually southerners, many of which I see are still
enjoying temps in the 80’s and still wearing
shorts and tanks. Unfortunately, here in Illinois that is not the
case. We had our first frost this past weekend and sweater weather is
undoubtedly here to stay. If you’re not aware, last winter we had
record-breaking snow fall and temps. According to
NOAA, 2013-2014 winter was among the coldest on record in the Midwest.
Rockford Illinois (about 60 miles north of where I live) was the 3rd coldest city on record last winter! Chicago had its 3rd
snowiest winter ever recorded with over
80 inches of snow last year, their snowiest was 89 inches in the winter
of ’78-’79, and the heaviest snowstorm of last winter was 11.7 inches
of recorded snowfall on Jan 4-5th. Do you see where I’m going with this? What it boils down to is that
it’s cold and snowy here and it sucks!
I thought I’d compile a list of the
essentials that every northerner should have to survive these brutal
winters, this winter is predicted to be worse than last!
Good winter boots
I’m in the market for a new pair and I’m loving these.
I found these at Dick’s a few years ago, you’ve gotta keep your toes warm when its below 0 out!
Winter=dry. Your lips will
be chapped, your face will be wind/cold burnt, and your skin will be
scaly! These are my tried and true favorites!
Your hair will be full of
static every single day. Using moisturizing shampoo and conditioner
will have combat that. Adding hairspray which is full of alcohol that
makes hair even drier, is
not the answer, moisture is.
Can’t stress MOISTURE
enough. This will help with your skin too! This Crane humidifier is a
little pricier, but it works so good, well worth the money.
All necessities. I always
try to buy texting gloves because once winter hit’s you almost never go
without your gloves on. Scarves are a must as are hats and hoods to
keep in the heat! I'm loving all 3 of these perfect winter accessories from Target!
Fabulous & Warm Coats
Fabulous & Warm Coats
I 100% believe that coats should cover your ass. When it's cold, and it gets COLD, I want as much coverage as possible. I think a classic wool/wool blend coat and a puffer are both necessities! And a hood is a must! I recently purchased the coat on the left & I'm loving it!
If you live in the South or somewhere warm where it doesn't snow, can I come to visit?
Wow I can't believe you already have had frost! It's definitely still in the upper 80's here... sorry girl! As much as I miss the midwest I definitely don't miss the winters. Definitely loving all your winter Target finds! So cute!

As a fellow Midwesterner I fully agree with everything on your list. Can we please please don't lease not have a repeat of last year!! I'm totally in the market for a pair of those Sorel boots!
ReplyDeleteThese things are so true! I live in the northeast and we experienced the same winter last year. It's crazy! I LOVE the cabin socks from Dicks and just purchased a new pair of winter boots.. though I am loving the ones you posted so much more!
ReplyDeleteI love every piece you posted today. I have to buy a few things myself it's suppose to be getting cold this weekend finally because this weather is so bipolar it had me sick with sore throat.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried OPI lotion, now I want to!
ReplyDeleteSuch fabulous fun winter "must haves"! Well...as far as anything that involves winter goes I guess. If you find somewhere to go in the south, let me know...I may join you. ;)
ReplyDeleteAh, I can't imagine having a winter that cold!!
ReplyDeleteThose boots are adorable! If you've never had a pair of Smart Wool socks, you need to get some ASAP! They are the warmest but won't make your feet all sweaty! I like the snowboard style because they are super tall & have fun designs that will peek out of boots! Perfect for over leggings.
ReplyDeleteI'll vouch for that! I went to school at U of I in Champaign and it was an unbearably cold winter. Especially walking to classes was extremely unpleasant. Now that I live in Florida I kinda miss the possibility of it being cold.
ReplyDeleteOh, winter. I'm not ready for it quite yet! And certainly hearing 'hard freeze' on the radio driving into work this morning had be cringing. I was really hoping to get through Halloween without having to bundle up! I bought a great winter coat, that covers my ass :), last winter and I'm a little excited to bust it out... Cute boots are definitely on my 'to buy' list!
ReplyDeleteOMG yes.....I live about an hour NW of Chicago and I have three winter coats. One that hits at my waist for 40-60 degrees, one that hits my knees and is heavier for 20-40 degrees, and one that hits my ankles and is the heaviest for 20 to -50 (as it was last year). I finally have it down to a science on how to dress and still walk outside to get to the office!
ReplyDeleteYup- right on point! I'm hoping for snow this year and lots of it- I have no idea why! haha
ReplyDeleteI can't live without my burts!
ReplyDeleteHoly smokes! I HATE cold weather. Seriously!!!! I don't know how you do it! But, at least there are some cute boots to wear along the way ;)
ReplyDeleteI live in the Pacific Northwest, so we don't get cold, we get WET. But I have always wondered how people on COLD places survive the winter. Honestly... how do you even get from your car to your house or your car to work without FREEZING?! Do you get used to it? Or am I just a big baby?
ReplyDeleteCome on down to southeast Texas girl! I believe this Friday our low will be 46 and the high will be 75, perfect!!
ReplyDeleteFellow northerner here..I need to invest in a long black puffer coat! I hope this winter isn't as bad as last!! It was miserable. This list is definitely spot on.
ReplyDeleteOk those boots there are to die for! Those hats and texting gloves are my favs!!! I need a hat like that stat. My brynn has one though so hey at least she will be fashionable!
ReplyDeleteYes you can absolutely come and visit!!!! I am a firm believer though when it's cold your booty must be covered!
ReplyDeleteOh how I wish it would cool down at night here. When we had the cold front I was loving sleeping with the windows open. Love the winter but I think I get over it quickly when it doesn't go away when it's suppose to.lol
ReplyDeleteThat coat yo bought is so cute! It gets pretty cold here in utah too, just with less humidity. We had our first frost this week as well!
ReplyDeletei totally agree with the coats covering your ass. if it comes to my hips, i'm basically not wearing it from september-february. lol. those cabin socks look interesting, i might have to get some!
ReplyDeleteI am in store for a new coat and I love one of those two that you shared! It has been really cold here in Michigan as well! We had our first frost about a month ago and have had several frosts since then - yikes!!! Stay warm! :)
