Friday Faves...House Updates!

We have had so much going on at the house these last few weeks I thought I would do a special edition of Friday favorites this week and share some of the things that we've been up to!  If you guys recall, we are doing all of the work ourselves.  We had the shell built, the doors and windows installed, the plumbing and the HVAC done by contractors but the rest is being done by us.  Joe used to be a drywall finisher and is really good at it so he did all of that himself along with all of the rest of the finishing work, and the electrical.

So first things first, the drywall.  Joe takes a lot of pride in his drywall so naturally, he did a beautiful job on ours!  Drywall takes a long time, it takes hanging sheets, putting up corner beads (and we have a lot of corners), taping, coating, sanding, coating again, sanding, finish coating, and finish sanding.  It’s a pretty daunting task and I’m really proud of Joe for his hard work and effort he put into making ours perfect.

Once the drywall was all finished we started painting!   I’m happy to say that as of Sunday we are done with all of the painting except the laundry and powder rooms off the garage.  Painting sucks!  It sucks even worse when your husbands is exceptionally good and it and has his standards set very high since it’s his drywall we were painting.  He did a good job of showing me the proper techniques and correcting me without making me feel like I was doing it completely wrong.  Of course he had to do some touch ups where I had missed a spot or bumped the ceiling, but I think I did a pretty good job.  I tried to gather all the patience I could to do a nice job.

After the kitchen was painted Joe got to put up the cabinets! I absolutely love our cabinets!  They’re finished in a Cotton finish and our island is in a Cherry finish.  I got my copper farm sink installed and they came to do our final template for our granite so we should see the counter tops installed in the next few weeks!  We still need to put the cabinet hardware and the crown molding up but those probably won’t be done until after we’re moved in.  We got all the appliances in and I am so in love!  One of my favorite kitchen details are the lights.  I love Edison bulbs, although at $8 a pop they are definitely pricey, they look amazing and I’m so happy with the way the pendant and the chandelier turned out.

There will be a breakfast bar on this side of the island, then over to the right is the banquette where we will have a hammered copper table.
the base cabinet on the far left is supposed to be white not cherry, that was another HD mistake.  But on a positive note, my GE Slate appliances are fabulous!  I'm so glad I went with the double oven!

Love my buffet area with display cabinets!

And my enormous 8'x4'x2' pantry!

These are the only cabinets that should be cherry! Can't wait to see the Venetian Gold granite on top with the hammered copper farm sink!!

Some other finishing touches, the lighting in the dining room and the entry way, the TV up on the wall (priorities, I know…), the master and guest bathroom tile is in progress, and the biggest project of all, the hardwood flooring, is also in progress and looking so beautiful!  We decided to glue down the flooring.  Although it’s more expensive, it has a more natural sound to it than nailing so we are really happy with our decision.  My projects right now are putting together all that Ikea furniture I ordered a few weeks back.  It is actually kind of fun, although a bit intimidating when you open the boxes up and find 500 million pieces!

Thinking of maybe a barn wood back splash up the wall behind the TV!

Ceramic tile made to look like weathered wood in our guest bath, seriously obsessed with this tile!

Crappy phone camera photo of the vanity on the weathered wood tile

I've got about $100 worth of Edison bulbs throughout the house, but I love them!  This is the banquette area again.

Eventually this will be the dining room

Master bath flooring, this tile will go all the way up the wall in the shower and on the face of the tub with a really pretty accent tile.

Really happy with our choice of hardwood!

guest bedroom #1 aka. eventual nursery will be the first room finished!

What we have left to do are the front and back porches, doors, trim, outlet and switch covers, carpet on the stairs, tile & paint in the laundry & powder rooms, drywall the garage ceiling, the septic, and replace the two guest bedroom windows that weren't up to code.  It sounds like a lot, and it is, but I am confident that we will be in our house this Spring.  Some of the finishing touches like the trim can be done after we move in, but in order to have get our occupancy permit there are certain things that must be done like the septic.  I am so happy with all the progress that we have made.  I really have to shout out my hardworking husband and father-in-law who have been really rocking getting all this work done.  My FIL is there every day helping Joe and Joe has been working until 1 and 2 in the morning trying to get this done for us.  He really is the hardest working man I know and is so dedicated to this house.  I am so thankful and blessed to have someone who is so handy and is so willing to learn if it’s something that he’s never done.  I can’t wait to finally call this our forever home!

  14. That ceramic tile in the guest bath is just gorgeous! I have never seen tile that resembles wood. Your house is coming along beautifully :) My husband and all the men in his family do all the work themselves when it comes to projects or building so I completely understand all that.

  21. I am so enthralled with your house building adventure, it just seems so exciting. When I was about 8 my parents built a new house (not themselves though) but I remember going over there every week and how exciting it was seeing the new progress. Loving your guest bath floors and just seeing everything come together, I'm sure that move it date is feeling closer and closer!

  25. The new cabinets really look regal, yet grounded, with the handiwork really showing through. Adding those really created a fine detail that can truly add more ambience on your home. Thanks for sharing that! All the best!
