The Story of Us - How We Met

So I totally stole this idea from Lisa Loves John.  I loved how she took her anniversary month and shared her love story.  Being that September is our anniversary month I thought I’d do the same and share a little bit about how Joe and I came to be.

The first I ever knew about Joe was my freshman year in high school back in 2001.  He was a senior at the time, one of those seniors that everyone knew.  All I knew about him was that he was a hot senior and that he drove a blue bronco.  I also knew that he was a Ridley boy, & the older brother to one of my classmates.  I really never talked to Joe when we were in high school, but a few years later I ran into him again when my best friend Jodie was dating Joe’s brother Jon.  We were probably juniors at this time and we needed to find someone to buy us our Bacardi Razz wine coolers so that we could have a jumpin’ good time at whatever house party we were off to.  I was dating my high school boyfriend at the time, Lenny.  The most vivid part of this memory was going to Joe’s house and him coming out and staying in a towel the entire time we were there.  It wasn’t until we started dating that I realized that this boy could live in a towel if given the chance.  After this we didn’t talk for a few years, a few MySpace messages here & there inviting me to take a ride on the bike or letting me know that he was down at ISU for the weekend, but I was not at a place in my life for any kind of relationship so I didn’t take his invites seriously.

If you’ve been reading along for a while then you know that Jodie and Jon got married at the tender age of 18, they both joined the Air Force and had two babies before we even turned 21!  Around Christmas of 2007 Jodie moved back home & lived with Jon & Joe’s parents while Jon was deployed to Korea for 1 year.  I started spending a lot of time at the Ridley’s house helping Jodie with the kids and spending time with my best friend who I hadn’t lived around for about 3 years.  I started seeing Joe on a pretty regular basis.  One night when Jon was home for a visit he and Jodie and I went out to the bars and I decided to text Joe to see if he wanted to meet us out.  I was home from ISU that weekend, he happened to be down at ISU that weekend at a friend’s party.  After that we started texting each other on the reg and decided that I would come home one weekend and we would hang out together.  The first weekend we spent time together was Super Bowl weekend of 2008, and we’ve been inseparable ever since that weekend.

I still to this day cannot believe that things worked out the way they did.  That I married THE Joe Ridley (he’ll be so proud of himself for me saying that), that all the girls in high school thought was so hot, & who would’ve thought that my best friend and I would end up marrying brothers and now we are sisters!

It’s not a glamorous or movie-worthy story, but it’s ours and it’s my favorite.  Joe came back into my life at a time where I was really vulnerable and going through some of the hardest times I’ve ever gone through to this day.  He has been 100% supportive of me from the beginning & I will always appreciate that about him.  When I was going through these times, being in a relationship, especially a new relationship was not recommended, but I still believe to this day that if it wasn’t for him I probably would’ve ended right back up where I was, at rock bottom.  I think this is what made our relationship different, we had to be really strong from the beginning, before we really even knew each other & we went through some really tough times because of my issues, but here we are celebrating 3 years of marriage and almost 7 years together.   And in the words of Tim McGraw, he’s the half that makes me whole, he has a poet’s soul, and the heart of man’s man—that’s what makes me love him so much.
